If you're planning a 2027 wedding at Toronto City Hall, you may have seen the news this week. Here is what has been reported, what hasn't been decided, and what you can do while we wait.
What's been reported
Local news outlets reported this week that City Hall weddings planned for 2027 are on hold. The reports point to two things happening at once: the City's plans for major construction and modernization at City Hall, and a contract dispute between the City and Ministerial Associates, the outside provider that runs the wedding chambers. Couples with 2027 dates are being told to look for other options. As of today there is no published timeline for construction and no confirmed plan for what comes next.
What this means for you
If your date is in 2026, nothing has been reported that changes it. If you're booked for 2027, contact the wedding chambers directly at (416) 363-0316 or info@marryus.org to confirm the status of your booking. If you haven't booked yet, it's worth waiting for clearer information before choosing a 2027 City Hall date. I'm not a lawyer or a City spokesperson, so please treat the City and the wedding chambers as your source of truth.
If you need a plan B (or just want a different plan A)
Here is the part nobody says out loud: you can marry almost anywhere with the owner's permission. Per the City's website, that includes a restaurant, a park, a home or a banquet hall. So this might be an invitation more than a setback.
Book a space that already feels like you. A studio like Junto Studio, your favourite restaurant with a private room, a garden, a ravine, a rooftop, the living room of someone you love. Then book your own officiant and let them marry you right there, in the exact setting you picked. No lineup, no 30 minute window, no one else's wedding in the next room.
If you still want the civic route, the City runs wedding chambers at the North York, Scarborough and York Civic Centres (a 30 minute booking is $136.85, and an officiant is not included), and is piloting civil ceremonies at North York Civic Centre and Old City Hall. A marriage licence is $180 and needs an in person appointment. A City Hall wedding was never about the building alone. It was about marrying simply, on your terms, and that part can happen anywhere. It is your day, and you get to celebrate it exactly how you want.
I'll update this post as soon as there is an official plan. If you're working out what your 2027 wedding looks like, send me a message and we'll figure it out together.
